Clinic Fire Services and Needs
- Clinic Fire Services and Needs FINAL: Community Health Centers throughout the county of San Diego have once again demonstrated their ability to meet the health care and related needs of their patients and communities, in this case during the devastating October wildfires. Despite lack of power, telephone outages, poor air quality, and leadership and staff who were evacuated or lost homes, most clinics remained open for most of the week (October 27-31, 2003). Clinics located in the city were open, providing medical services, prescription refills, and mental health services as needed to their patients and surrounding communities. Clinics in rural areas, though closed for a time, were ultimately heroic in the services they provided. Some had small generators that allowed for partial functioning, and others worked closely with their American Red Cross shelter to provide health care. One clinic, Mountain Health and Community Services, set up their own 24-hour shelter to care for rural residents displaced by the fire. See the attached report for a detailed description.
